Sealants

They can help to prevent cavities from developing and will protect teeth from stains.

What are Sealants?

Sealants are protective coverings that are placed on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. They can help to prevent cavities from developing and will protect teeth from stains. While sealants are mostly done on children’s teeth, adults can and will benefit from having them placed. If you already have a lot of fillings or are susceptible to tooth decay, sealants can prevent the need for fillings, root canals and extractions.

Why are Sealants needed?

You may need sealants if you are vulnerable to developing cavities. If you already have a lot of fillings, you’ll benefit from having sealants placed. For children, sealants are essential in protecting sensitive teeth from both decay as well as stains. Because sealants require no anesthetic and take just minutes to apply, they’re ideal for most patients of all ages.

Who’s a good candidate for Sealants?

We will perform an exam to determine if you’d benefit from sealants. We often recommend sealants to pediatric patients who don’t have the best oral care routine or who eat a lot of sugary snacks. Sealants can be required by adult patients at any time as a way to protect your teeth and prevent cavities from forming. They can last for about one to three years because they naturally wear away.

What happens during the procedure for Sealants?

You’ll come into our office and be seated comfortably in one of our rooms. The back teeth are cleaned and dried in preparation for the sealant. The sealant is then applied to the back teeth on the chewing surfaces only. Once the sealant has been brushed on, it’s cured into place with a bright light. The entire procedure takes about a half an hour and can be a proactive approach to saving your teeth. You can request sealants at any time when coming into our office and we recommend reapplying them as they begin to wear.

If you think you may need to have sealants placed or want to learn more about the procedure, call us today and we will get you in for an appointment.
