Fight Cavities Before They Start with Dental Sealants
What if you could prevent cavities from ever happening? That’s right – actually making it easier to keep your teeth clean and blocking acids and bacteria from causing tooth decay in some of the most susceptible areas of your mouth? That’s exactly what dental sealants do!
What are Sealants?
Dental sealants are protective coatings that are placed into the deep pits and grooves over the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars.) Most sealants will last for 5 to 10 years if cared for properly. Unlike fillings, sealants are placed right over healthy tooth enamel and don’t require anesthesia. In fact, we often apply them after routine dental cleanings.
Protecting Teeth When it Matters the Most
Dr. Elsa recommends placing sealants on the permanent molars as soon as they have erupted, which helps deter childhood tooth decay. The first set of molars erupts around age 6, and the second set around age 12. Because children are so susceptible to cavities, placing sealants over the chewing surfaces helps dramatically decrease the rate of childhood tooth decay in Graceful Smiles Dentistry patients.
Just How Simple is it?
Very simple! After your teeth are cleaned, we place a conditioning etch to lightly roughen the top layer of enamel. A few seconds later, this conditioner is rinsed away and the tooth is dried thoroughly. The sealant material is then applied directly onto the tooth with something that looks like a very small paintbrush. Once the entire tooth is covered, we will use a curing light that will permanently harden the material in about 30 seconds. Each sealant takes just a few minutes to complete!
The affordable cost of sealants makes them a perfect investment for your child’s smile. Even adults can take advantage of the procedure!
