October is National Dental Hygiene Month and that excites us. One month out of the year the American Dental Health Association and the Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program work together to raise public awareness about the benefits of good dental hygiene and proper preventive dental care.  Why? Because poor oral hygiene leads to poor general health.

This month, we would like to share the campaigns “Do The Daily 4” with you. The Daily 4 provide the preventive dental care that one needs to have a healthy mouth.

Brush: To prevent tooth decay and gum disease, it is recommended that you brush two times a day, for two minutes each time. This will loosen plaque buildup, which is the leading cause of tooth decay.

Floss: Your toothbrush can’t reach the tiny crevices between your teeth and food and plaque like to hide there. To get rid of these pesky hidden particles, flossing is an essential part of your daily routine.

Rinse: Rinse your mouth with an antimicrobial mouthwash, which will kill bacteria in your mouth that causes bad breath and can lead to gum disease. You should also look for mouthwashes that have the ADA Seal of Acceptance. These seals indicate that a mouthwash is not only safe but effective as well.

Chew: Chewing sugar-free gum throughout the day can help keep your pearly whites clean between brushings. Chewing stimulates saliva production and saliva neutralizes plaque acids, remineralizes enamel and washes away food particles. Who would have thought that a simple piece of gum could do all of that?
